29 Amazon Long Haul Flight Essentials You Need to Survive Economy
Are you planning a vacation to a far-off destination and wondering what long haul flight essentials you need to get through it? You’ve come to the right place!
Prior to our 20+ hour economy trek to Zanzibar, I had never even flown for more than three hours before. Because of that, I was woefully unaware of just how intense of an experience that length of flight would be. And I was completely ignorant about what to pack in my carry on to make the experience more tolerable.
Keep reading for a list of 27 long haul flight essentials that you can find on Amazon that will help you survive economy class!
Long Haul Flight Essentials: Comfort & Sleep
Comfortable Travel Outfit
A comfortable travel outfit is key to surviving a long haul flight. Don’t wear anything that will cut into your skin or need constant adjustment. I personally always wear a stretchy jumpsuit. People have called me crazy but the ones I pick are super easy on and easy off in the restroom. I have had success with a jumpsuit on several 30+ hour flights! Otherwise a two piece loungewear set works well. They don’t look like pajamas, but they sure feel like it.
Travel Sweater
Airplanes are COLD! Wear a comfortable travel sweater as part of your travel outfit to keep you warm and cozy. Plus this gives you a warmer layer if you need it at your destination.
Compression Socks
Spending a long haul flight in your street shoes can be extremely uncomfortable. Ditch your shoes after take off and grab a pair of compression socks to help keep your feet and legs comfortable and supported against swelling. Plus, compression socks protect against the threat of DVT (deep vein thrombosis)!
Foot Sling
This probably one of the niftiest products that I’ve seen. This little sling attaches to your tray table and provides a comfy hammock to rest your feet on.
Travel Pillow and Blanket
Most long haul international flights provide a pillow and blanket. However, they are usually pretty thin and scratchy. Consider bringing your own travel pillow and blanket, like one of these sets that has a blanket folded into a pillow for 2-in-1 comfort.
Sleep Mask
Make sure you pack a sleep mask so you can have a dark sleeping environment even in the middle of the day. Jet lag who?
Ear Plugs
Ear plugs can definitely help you drown out the noise around you so you can get some shut eye. And if the pressure bothers you, choose an ear plug that is pressure reliving.
Sleep Aid
Not only can sleeping on a plane be difficult, but travel and timezones can wreak havoc on your ability to rest and feel refreshed. Try taking a sleep aid or melatonin supplements to help you get some shut eye.
Long Haul Flight Essentials: Personal Care & Health
Sheet Mask
Once on a flight I sat next to a woman who put on a sheet mask and immediately fell asleep. Genius! Now I pack a different sheet mask for each leg of my trip to keep my skin hydrated and calm under the stress of travel.
Chapstick
Planes are incredibly drying. Don’t neglect your lip’s moisture. There is nothing worse than 8+ hours of burning, chapped lips!
Travel Toothbrush & Paste
A travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste is an absolute must. And if you don’t want to bust out your regular toothbrush on the plane, single use mini toothbrushes are a lifesaver – with toothpaste built in!
Body Balm
Airplanes can be so drying. Avoid dry skin and crackled knuckles by packing on of these travel sized body balms. The best part is these moisturizers are not considered a liquid the way regular lotion would be, so it won’t count towards your liquid bag!
Deodorant
For everyone’s sake, pack a mini deodorant in your carry on so you can refresh your underarms midway through the flight. Let’s hope everyone else on the plane is as thoughtful!
Face & Body Wipes
Baby wipes are a perfect for a quick body refresh – especially on a long flight where it will be a while until your next shower! And I love face wipes as well to periodically refresh my face, and to remove makeup if you wear any.
Sanitizing Wipes
Airplanes can be filthy places, even with strict cleaning protocols! Make sure to pack some sanitizing wipes to wipe surfaces and your hands periodically during your flight. And the best part is that wipes do not count towards your liquid allowance.
Menstrual Cup or Disc
If you are expecting your period during your flight, make sure you bring period products! I highly recommend trying a menstrual cup or disc instead of packing a box of. Both are long-lasting before a change is required, take up less space, and the cup has the added benefit of being reusable.
Eye-care Supplies
Contacts wearers, don’t forget your contacts supplies! You’ll be miserable if you spend the flight with your contacts in. Bring contact solution, a case, glasses, and spare contacts just in case. Even non-contacts wearers may benefit from eye drops.
Contact solution is considered a medicine, not a liquid! You do not have to fit a travel sized bottle in your quart size bag when flying out of the US. Just declare any full-size, unopened bottles at security. Make sure you check liquid restrictions at your destination.
Pill Organizer
Don’t forget to pack all of your pills, medications, and vitamins! A handy pill organizer like one of these will help you remember to take your medication on schedule.
Long Haul Flight Essentials: Entertainment
Tablet or Kindle
Load up your iPad or tablet with downloaded movies, games, and podcasts to keep you entertained for hours. Or for readers, load a few new reads on your kindle. You can easily download free e-books and audio books from your local library!
Phone Mount
If you plan to watch movies on your phone, then you need one of these airplane phone holders or mounts.
Power Bank
For some reason I always seem to have a device that is close to dying when I travel. It must be the excessive usage! Make sure you pack a portable power bank so you can recharge your devices mid-flight.
Headphones
Most international and long haul provides headphones, but they really aren’t comfortable and definitely don’t block out sound effectively. I always bring my own high quality headphones. Extra points for noise cancelling!
Bluetooth Adapter
If you want to use your bluetooth headphones to watch the in-flight entertainment, you need a bluetooth adapter. These allow up to two pairs so you can watch with your travel buddy!
Essentials Organizer
Have you ever seen one of these cool contraptions? Just hang this organizer over your tray and you’ll have not only a clean tray surface, but awesome organization to keep all of your flight essentials easily at hand. And if you don’t want the full-on tray organizer, consider a few portable accessory bags to organize your items.
Cord Organizer
There is nothing worse than loose cables and cords inside your carry on bag! Instead use a cable organizer pouch to ensure your device’s cables are easy to access and tangle free.
Activity Book or Journal
Pack a notebook, diary, or journal to capture your thoughts, or try some fun crossword puzzles and games.
Long Haul Flight Essentials: Snacks & Beverages
Collapsible Water Bottle
You have got to get one of these water bottles that fold up and take up very little room in your carry on. Then, once you are past security, you can fill it up and have a full bottle of water for your flight.
Snacks
The best snacks to pack are protein bars and nuts. Perfect for when you are getting a little hangry on your flight or in between meals. Pack some in your carry on to avoid spending the big bucks at the airport convenience shop.
Electrolytes
It’s important to keep yourself hydrated on long flights! One of my favorite travel essentials are these electrolyte powder mixes that you can pour into your water. They give great hydration but don’t increase your bathroom usage!
